Michigan Lawyers Weekly names Murray among its Go To Lawyers for business transactions

05.03.2024

Plunkett Cooney partner James J. Murray was recently named to the 2024 Class of Go To Lawyers for Business Transactions as determined by Michigan Lawyers Weekly (MiLW).

The managing partner of Plunkett Cooney’s Petoskey office, Murray will be featured in a special section of the May 20 print and digital issues of MiLW, a news publication covering the state’s legal community. Michigan’s Go To Lawyers is a nomination-based program that recognizes the top lawyers across the state in given areas of practice.

According to MiLW, the “Go To Lawyer” designation is awarded based on experience, expertise and track records of success. The review includes size and scope of litigation or transactional practices, high referral rates based on expertise and accomplishments, and creative problem solving that identifies all options for clients. Nominated lawyers are those whose colleagues would refer to a business associate, friend or use themselves in a particular field of expertise.

Since 1998, Murray has been a partner with Plunkett Cooney. His northern Michigan practice includes extensive experience in the areas of business law, real estate, banking, municipal law and estate planning. He also serves as city attorney for the city of Petoskey.

Murray is a member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan, as well as a former Board member of the Michigan Legal Defense Fund and the Association of Municipal Attorneys. He is a past President of the Emmet-Charlevoix Bar Association and serves as a member of the grievance panel for the State Bar of Michigan. Murray is also co-chair of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation Board of Trustees.

Murray received his law degree, magna cum laude, and undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in 1987 and 1982, respectively.

Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney is a leading provider of business law and litigation services to clients in the private and public sectors. The firm employs approximately 130 attorneys in seven Michigan cities, and in Chicago, Illinois, Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana.
